How can I access mental health services?

There are different ways to access mental health services depending on your needs and preferences. Some of the common ways are:

  • Calling the NSW Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511. This is a free and confidential service that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A mental health professional will answer your call and ask you some questions to determine your needs and how urgently you need help. They can then refer you to the most appropriate local service for your situation.
  • Visiting your GP. Your GP can assess your mental health, prescribe medication if needed, refer you to other services such as psychologists or psychiatrists, and write a mental health care plan for you. A mental health care plan is a document that outlines your goals and the treatment and support you will receive. It also entitles you to Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions per year with a psychologist or other allied health professional.
  • Contacting a private service. You can also access mental health services privately by paying a fee or using your private health insurance. You may need a referral from your GP or you may be able to contact them directly. Some examples of private services are psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists and private hospitals.
  • Using online or phone services. There are many online or phone services that offer information, advice, counselling and support for people with mental health issues. Some of them are free and some may charge a fee. Some examples are Beyond Blue (1300 224 636), Lifeline (13 11 14), Kids Helpline (1800 551 800), Suicide Call Back Service (1300 659 467) and Head to Health (https://headtohealth.gov.au/).
